  • Overview

Neurotrophic keratitis (NK) remains significantly underdiagnosed because early findings are easily mistaken for dry eye disease and other ocular surface disorders. Although reduced corneal sensitivity is the defining feature of NK, corneal sensitivity testing is not routinely performed, resulting in missed opportunities to identify stage 1 NK when intervention is most effective. Treatment at stage 1 can preserve corneal sensitivity and prevent progression to epithelial defects, but many clinicians may lack the confidence needed to initiate treatment earlier. This activity has been designed to improve clinicians’ ability to differentiate and diagnose NK and to select optimal treatment regimens based on evidence from recent studies and current guidelines.

  • Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, learners should be better able to:

    • Integrate corneal sensitivity testing into ocular surface evaluations to identify patients at risk for neurotrophic keratitis
    • Differentiate stage 1 neurotrophic keratitis from dry eye disease and other ocular surface disorders using guideline-aligned neurosensory indicators
    • Apply clinical-trial and real-world evidence to initiate stage-appropriate treatment of neurotrophic keratitis
  • Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of optometrists and ophthalmologists as well as all other physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and healthcare professionals involved in managing patients with glaucoma.

  • Accreditation and Credit Designation Statements

In support of improving patient care, Global Learning Collaborative (GLC) is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Global Learning Collaborative (GLC) designates this asynchronous activity for a maximum of 1.0 COPE credit hour.
